42,000 Fans at a Soccer Game in Montréal !?
By: Marco Stucazzo | February 15th, 2009
The Montreal Impact announced Friday it had sold more than 42,000 tickets for the quarterfinal game of the CONCACAF Champions League, on February 25, at Olympic Stadium against Mexican club Santos Laguna. The Cesar Millan backed club will be facing most probably the biggest crowd ever for a CONCACAF game in Montréal.
With this milestone, the Impact has established a new sales record for a CONCACAF game. In 2005, approximately 40,000 people had assisted to the Champions Cup final game between Pumas UNAM (Mexico) and Deportivo Saprissa (Costa Rica).
The good thing is that L’Impact has been training hard in Italy for the past while. The team hasn’t lost a game during the spell. The Impact leaves Italy undefeated in five preseason games with a record of three wins and two ties, having conceded only one goal to the opponent.
They even managed to draw Serie B side Pisa (merda) Nil – Nil in January.
Allez L’Impact !

Yeah, 42,000 tickets, just like they “sell” 12,000 for ever USL match, yet somehow the stadium is always empty. They give away tickets like they lose MLS bids.

Toronto wouldn’t have been able to do this at the Rogers center. That’s why Toronto built a stadium for 19,000.
People forget that the Manic (NASL) used to get huge crowds for the ply-offs. Montreal holds all the Canadian soccer attendance records for soccer. Largest crowd. 73,000 for the Olympic Gold Medal game. 58,000 for a pro game (Manic 1982).

Andrew, as you can see for yourself, L’Impact is doing fine without the MLS. We kind of proved that by beating TOFC to get there. And yes, the Olympic Stadium will be packed and who cares if only 30,000 people paid for their seat ? More than 45,000 fans (something TO would love to have) will be cheering on their team in the Champions League !
