Montréal 2 – 0 Santos Laguna, Highlights of Historical Win in front of 55,000+ Fans !!!
By: Marco Stucazzo | February 25th, 2009
Who’d a thunk it !?!?!?!

2 brilliant goals from returning Cuban sensation Eduardo Sebrango was enough to upset Mexican club Santos at Montréal’s Olympic stadium. A near-capacity crowd of 55,571 took in a CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal game, a 2-0 win for l’Impact of the United Soccer League over Mexican club Santos Laguna. More than 55,000 fans showed up for a soccer game in North America, and not even an international fixture, a club game !?!!
L’Impact the Montéal wasn’t even seen as taking part in the CONCACAF Champions League let alone taking a 2-nil lead in the first leg of the quarter final ! This is just a great day for soccer in Québec and goes to show, the MLS needs l’Impact more than l’Impact needs the MLS !

What a game and what an atmosphere! We looked the less skilled team perhaps, but we out worked them and were more opportunistic to come up with a historic win. This sets us up nicely for the second leg seeing as Santos didn’t get that crucial away goal. It would be nothing short of astonishing to see the Impact in the semi-finals of the CONCACAF version of Champions League.

This is awesome! Congrats!!!!

I was there and all I can say is WOW! A+ show on the field, A+ show in the stands, the fans really showed passion for the home team like only Montreal can and I really hope this is a clear message to the MLS/broadcasters to finally witness the emergence of soccer in Canada. It may not be world class soccer but it’s professional soccer at a cheap price and people seem to eat it whole so why not show them more?

Fuck c’est brillant ca mon gars

Wow. I caught the game on TV and Montréal is a very good team. Very solid, skilled players… though I am mexican, I think they deserve to advance to the next round of the CCL

This is great! Congratulation, fantastic match in front of a huge crowd. Sebrango was a perfect addition to this team.

I was thrilled and proud about the results.I’ve been a soccer fan since very long. I supported the Manic more than 25 years ago and assisted to a playoff game with 65,000 fans and + at the same stadium. This is nice to see l’Impact attract such a large crowd. I believe this team deserves to play in the best competitive league, so the Direction of the team must do whatever they can to become a MLS team.USL gives great games but in my mind if Montréal does’nt take step to get into MLS, the team will not play at the best level possible, cause they would become a major club in the MLS.

Awesome for Montreal, but it brings their median CONCACAF attendance up to 10k – not exactly a mandate for being “needed” by MLS. Montreal needs Joey Saputo to get a clue more than MLS needs Montreal. Congrats on the big win are due in full measure, though.

Excellent result from Montreal. Also, a great crowd on hand. That said, the game was played at a mediocre level with some horrendous passing and marking.
MLS is definitely a step up using that game as a measure. I was somewhat shocked as to how poorly a Mexican First Division team was playing.
Does MLS need Montreal to be successful – absolutely not. However, the reverse will become more and more apparent as MLS moves forward to higher levels, and the significant teams in USL jump to MLS.

Who won that Montreal-Houston game again today?

I agree that the MLS needs Montreal. Please pay the 40 mil and join the league immediately. Thank you.

Marco,
You are a moron. MLS doesn’t need Montreal. MLS is the strongest it has ever been. While most sports leagues are suffering during the recession MLS continues to break season ticket sales records. Try using your brain for something more than a door stop.
